E-Commerce Impressum Guide: Amazon, eBay, Shopify & Online Shops (2026 Germany)

Complete Impressum compliance guide for e-commerce sellers in Germany. Platform-specific setup for Amazon.de, eBay, eBay Kleinanzeigen, Shopify, and independent online shops.

If you sell products online to German customers — whether through Amazon, eBay, your own Shopify store, or standalone website — you're legally required to display an Impressum. This isn't optional marketing language; it's a mandatory legal disclosure under § 5 DDG that can result in €50,000 fines and immediate product delisting if violated.

E-commerce compliance in Germany goes far beyond Impressum. You're also navigating VerpackG packaging regulations (LUCID registration), VAT collection, GPSR product safety requirements, and EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) laws. But Impressum violations are among the most frequently enforced — and the easiest to detect.

German competitors and consumer protection organizations actively scan marketplaces for missing or incorrect Impressum information. One Abmahnung (legal warning) can cost you €500-€1,500 in legal fees, plus mandatory corrections, plus potential ongoing penalties. For Amazon sellers specifically, Impressum non-compliance can trigger account suspension until corrected.

This guide provides platform-specific Impressum implementation for the major e-commerce channels serving Germany, plus specialized advice for sellers dealing with unique compliance challenges like FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon), cross-border VAT, and virtual office addresses.

This is Part 3 of our Impressum series. Start with Part 1: What is an Impressum? and Part 2: Social Media Impressum Guide.

Who Needs an E-Commerce Impressum?

The Commercial Standard for Online Sellers

If you're reading this article, you almost certainly need an Impressum. E-commerce by definition is commercial activity — you're selling products for profit. The § 5 DDG requirement applies to all "geschäftsmäßige, in der Regel gegen Entgelt angebotene digitale Dienste" (business-like digital services typically offered for remuneration).1

Definitely Requires Impressum:

  • Amazon.de seller accounts (individual or professional)
  • eBay.de commercial listings
  • eBay Kleinanzeigen business accounts
  • Shopify stores targeting German customers
  • WooCommerce, Magento, or custom e-commerce sites with German sales
  • Marketplace sellers (Etsy, Kaufland, Otto, etc.)
  • Dropshipping businesses selling to Germany
  • Digital product stores (downloadable software, courses, templates)

Gray Area (Usually Still Required):

  • Amazon FBA sellers with no German legal entity (still selling to Germany triggers requirement)
  • "Test" stores with just a few products listed
  • Selling exclusively via third-party platforms with no separate website

Does NOT Require Impressum:

  • True one-time private sales (selling your personal used items on eBay Kleinanzeigen occasionally)
  • Internal company systems not accessible to public
  • Wholesale-only businesses with no consumer-facing online presence

Geography Doesn't Matter — Target Market Does

Critical principle: Your physical business location is irrelevant. What matters is your target market.

If you're a US-based, UK-based, or Chinese seller shipping to Germany, you still need an Impressum visible to German customers. German law applies the "Marktortprinzip" (marketplace principle) — the rules of the market where you sell apply to you.

Indicators you're targeting Germany:

  • Selling on Amazon.de or eBay.de
  • Accepting payments in euros
  • Offering German-language product descriptions
  • Advertising to German customers
  • Using German shipping carriers (DHL, DPD, Hermes)
  • Storing inventory in German Amazon FBA warehouses

Even one of these factors can establish you're conducting business in Germany and thus subject to German commercial law, including Impressum requirements.

Core Impressum Requirements for E-Commerce

Before diving into platform-specific implementations, here's what your e-commerce Impressum must include:2

Required for All Sellers

1. Full Legal Name

  • Individuals: First and last name (not business name or pseudonym alone)
  • Companies: Complete company name including legal form (GmbH, UG, AG, Ltd., LLC, etc.)

2. Physical Address (Ladungsfähige Anschrift)

  • Must be: Complete street address where legal documents can be served
  • Cannot be: P.O. box, Packstation, vague city reference
  • Can be: Virtual office IF it meets specific requirements (physical presence, staffed during business hours, signage)

3. Contact Information

  • Email address (mandatory)
  • Phone number (legally optional but strongly recommended for e-commerce)
  • Alternative: Responsive contact form if you can demonstrate equivalent speed

Required if Applicable

4. Business Registration Details

  • Handelsregisternummer (commercial register number) if registered
  • Registergericht (registration court location)
  • Umsatzsteuer-Identifikationsnummer (VAT ID) if you have one
  • W-IdNr (Economic ID number) if applicable from 2026+

5. Authorized Representatives

  • For companies: Managing director (Geschäftsführer), board members (Vorstand)
  • For partnerships: All partners or designated representatives

6. Professional Association Details (if applicable)

  • Lawyers, doctors, architects: Chamber membership
  • Professional title and issuing jurisdiction
  • Governing regulations and how to access them

E-Commerce-Specific Additions

7. Dispute Resolution (Previously Required, Now Optional)

  • Before Feb 2024: Link to EU ODR platform was mandatory
  • After Feb 2024: EU discontinued the ODR platform; link now obsolete
  • Current: Statement about alternative dispute resolution willingness (optional but recommended)

8. Supervisory Authority (if regulated)

  • If your products require licenses (medical devices, financial services, etc.)
  • Name and contact for relevant regulatory body

Amazon.de: Seller Central Impressum Setup

Amazon Germany takes Impressum compliance seriously and will suspend listings or entire accounts for violations. The platform is legally required to verify seller compliance.

Where Amazon Sellers Add Impressum

Amazon provides a dedicated section in Seller Central:

  1. Seller Central → Settings → Account Info
  2. Scroll to "Legal Entity" or "Legal Information"
  3. Complete all required fields:
    • Legal business name
    • Business address
    • Contact email
    • Contact phone number
    • Business registration number (if applicable)
    • VAT ID (mandatory for EU sellers using FBA Germany)
  4. Amazon automatically displays this information on your seller profile

How Customers See Your Impressum

On Amazon.de product listings:

  • Seller name appears next to "Verkauft von" (Sold by)
  • Clicking your seller name leads to your seller profile
  • Profile displays all legal information you entered

Common Amazon.de Impressum Violations

❌ Using fulfillment center address as business address

  • "Amazon Logistik" is NOT your business address
  • Even if you use FBA, list YOUR legal entity address

❌ Incomplete company name

  • "TechGadgets" ❌
  • "TechGadgets GmbH" ✅

❌ Missing VAT ID when required

  • If you store inventory in Germany (FBA), VAT registration is mandatory
  • Amazon may withhold payouts until VAT ID is provided

❌ Outdated information

  • You moved 6 months ago but didn't update Seller Central
  • Still shows old managing director who left the company

Amazon-Specific Compliance Layers

Beyond Impressum, Amazon.de sellers must also comply with:

VerpackG / LUCID Registration

  • Register packaging materials at verpackungsregister.org
  • Get LUCID number and enter it in Seller Central
  • Contract with "Dual System" for recycling fees
  • Penalty for non-compliance: Product delisting, fines up to €200,000

GPSR (General Product Safety Regulation)

  • Effective 2024, requires EU "Responsible Person" for all products
  • Upload product safety images showing labels/warnings
  • Add Responsible Person info in Seller Central dashboard
  • Penalty: Immediate product delisting

EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility)

  • Beyond packaging: electronics, batteries, textiles may have additional EPR requirements
  • Country-specific registrations needed

Amazon monitors all these simultaneously. Missing Impressum is just one enforcement trigger among many.

Amazon treats missing legal data as a compliance breach. Expect listing suppression or account suspension until corrected.

FBA Sellers: Special Address Considerations

The Problem: Many international FBA sellers don't have a German legal entity but sell on Amazon.de.

The Solution Options:

Option 1: German Virtual Office

  • Rent address from German virtual office provider
  • Must have physical presence (not just mail forwarding)
  • Typically €30-€100/month
  • Use this address in Impressum

Option 2: Form German Legal Entity

  • Register GmbH, UG, or branch office in Germany
  • Provides real German address for Impressum
  • Required anyway if revenue exceeds certain thresholds
  • Expensive (€1,000+ setup) but provides strongest compliance

Option 3: Home Country Address (Limited Scenarios)

  • If you're EU-based, can use home country address
  • Still need German VAT registration if using FBA Germany
  • Impressum must clearly indicate you're non-German entity

Amazon Pan-EU FBA: Multi-Country Impressum

If you use Amazon's Pan-European FBA (storing inventory across DE, FR, IT, ES, PL, CZ):

  • You need compliant legal disclosures for each country
  • Each Amazon domain (amazon.de, amazon.fr, etc.) should show country-appropriate info
  • Germany has strictest Impressum enforcement
  • Manage this in Seller Central → Europe Marketplaces

eBay.de: Commercial Seller Impressum

eBay Germany requires commercial sellers to display Impressum information in their listings and seller profile.

eBay.de Seller Account Setup

  1. Mein eBay (My eBay) → Konto (Account) → Einstellungen (Settings)
  2. Scroll to "Einstellungen für gewerbliche Verkäufer" (Settings for commercial sellers)
  3. Click "Ändern" (Change) next to "Informationen zu gewerblichen Verkäufern auf Artikelseiten anzeigen" (Display commercial seller information on product pages)
  4. Enter required Impressum details in "Rechtliche Informationen des Verkäufers" (Legal information of seller):
    • Name and address
    • Contact information
    • Business registration (if applicable)
    • VAT ID (if applicable)
  5. Click "Speichern" (Save)

How eBay Displays Your Impressum

  • Appears at bottom of each product listing under "Verkäuferinformationen" (Seller information)
  • Also visible in your eBay Store (if you have one)
  • Buyers can click through to see full legal disclosure

When Private Becomes Commercial on eBay

Private sellers (keine Impressumspflicht):

  • Occasionally selling personal used items
  • No Gewerbe (business license) registered
  • No pattern of regular sales

Commercial sellers (Impressumspflicht applies):

  • Registered Gewerbe
  • Selling new items (or large quantities of used items)
  • Regular, ongoing sales activity
  • "Unternehmer" (entrepreneur) legal status

German courts look at pattern and intent. Even without formal business registration, if you're clearly operating commercially (bulk listings, new products, systematic sourcing), you need Impressum.

Updating Impressum Across Multiple Listings

eBay requires Impressum update for all active listings when information changes:

  1. Navigate to Mein eBay → Verkaufen (Selling) → Aktive Angebote (Active listings)
  2. Select listings to update (max 200 at once)
  3. Click "Überarbeiten" (Revise)
  4. Choose to update Anbieterkennzeichnung (Seller identification)
  5. Confirm changes

If you have >200 active listings, repeat the process in batches.

eBay Kleinanzeigen: Business Account Impressum

eBay Kleinanzeigen (now just "Kleinanzeigen") is Germany's largest classifieds platform. It's primarily for private sellers but also supports commercial accounts.

When Kleinanzeigen Requires Impressum

Requires Impressum:

  • You have a business account (gewerbliches Konto)
  • You sell "planmäßig und dauerhaft" (systematically and permanently)
  • You've registered a Gewerbe for your sales activity

Does NOT require Impressum:

  • True private sales (selling your old bicycle, furniture, etc.)
  • Occasional, one-off listings
  • No profit intent

How to Add Impressum on Kleinanzeigen

Unlike eBay.de, Kleinanzeigen requires Impressum per listing:

  1. When creating an ad, scroll to "Rechtliche Angaben" (Legal information) section
  2. Enter complete Impressum information in the provided field
  3. This information auto-populates for future listings from your account

Visibility: Appears at bottom of each listing, accessible to potential buyers.

Kleinanzeigen Compliance Challenge

The platform's format makes it difficult to maintain comprehensive legal disclosures. Many sellers link to external Impressum page:

"Vollständiges Impressum: [URL]"

However, this raises the question: Does an external link satisfy "unmittelbar erreichbar" (directly accessible) requirement? German courts haven't definitively ruled, but best practice is to include complete information directly in the Kleinanzeigen field, even if it's lengthy.

Shopify: Standalone Store Impressum

Shopify is popular among German e-commerce sellers for its ease of use, but it doesn't provide automatic German compliance features.

Creating Impressum Page in Shopify

Step 1: Create Legal Page

  1. Shopify Admin → Online Store → Pages
  2. Click "Add page"
  3. Title: "Impressum" or "Legal Notice"
  4. Content: Enter complete Impressum information (or use generator)
  5. Click "Save"

Step 2: Add to Footer Navigation

  1. Shopify Admin → Online Store → Navigation
  2. Select Footer menu (most common placement)
  3. Click "Add menu item"
  4. Name: "Impressum"
  5. Link: Select your newly created Impressum page
  6. Click "Save menu"

Step 3: Verify Visibility

  • Visit your storefront
  • Check footer — "Impressum" link should be clearly visible
  • Click through to verify page loads correctly
  • Test on mobile devices (most German traffic is mobile)

Shopify Multi-Language Stores

If you sell in multiple languages:

  1. Create separate Impressum pages for each language
  2. German Impressum at /pages/impressum
  3. English Legal Notice at /pages/legal-notice
  4. Use Shopify's language selector to route appropriately

However, the German-language Impressum is mandatory when selling to Germany, regardless of other languages offered.

Shopify + German-Specific Apps

Several Shopify apps help with German compliance:

  • Pandectes GDPR Compliance — Includes Impressum and Privacy Policy generators
  • German Market by MarketPress — Comprehensive German legal compliance
  • Impressum Generator (various) — Some free, some paid

Warning: These apps are helpful but not substitutes for legal review. Apps may not update instantly when laws change (like TMG → DDG in 2024).

WooCommerce / WordPress E-Commerce

WooCommerce is popular for custom online shops. Implementation is similar to Shopify but with more flexibility.

Adding Impressum to WooCommerce

Method 1: WordPress Page + Footer Link

  1. WordPress Dashboard → Pages → Add New
  2. Title: "Impressum"
  3. Content: Enter legal information
  4. Publish page
  5. Go to Appearance → Menus
  6. Add Impressum page to Footer menu
  7. Save

Method 2: German Market Plugin

  • Install "German Market" plugin by MarketPress
  • Provides Impressum, AGBs, Widerrufsbelehrung templates
  • Automatically places in footer
  • €79-€129 one-time cost (includes updates)

WooCommerce Checkout Page Impressum

German law requires legal information accessible from checkout process:

  • Add small footer notice in checkout page: "Siehe Impressum und AGB"
  • Some themes support custom checkout footer content
  • Alternative: Use WooCommerce Checkout Add-ons plugin

Custom / Independent Online Shops

If you built your own e-commerce system (not using Shopify/WooCommerce):

Technical Implementation

HTML Footer Example:

    Impressum
    Datenschutz
    AGB

Requirements:

  • Impressum link visible on every page (typically footer)
  • Page accessible via /impressum or /legal-notice
  • Loads in under 2 seconds (slow pages = accessibility violation)
  • Mobile-responsive (60%+ of German traffic is mobile)
  • No login required to view

Accessibility (BFSG 2025+)

If your online shop exceeds micro-enterprise thresholds (10 employees, €2M revenue), you must also ensure:

  • WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance
  • Accessibility Statement page alongside Impressum
  • This applies to legal pages too (Impressum must be accessible)

Multi-Platform Sellers: Centralized Approach

If you sell on Amazon + eBay + your own Shopify store, you need Impressum on all three. However, you don't need three different Impressums — the content can be identical.

  1. Create Master Impressum

    • Host on your primary website or standalone page
    • Example URL: yourstore.com/impressum
  2. Reference or Copy to Each Platform

    • Amazon: Enter information directly in Seller Central (Amazon doesn't allow external Impressum links for core data)
    • eBay: Enter in Seller Settings (same — eBay wants info on-platform)
    • Shopify: Create Impressum page on your store
    • Kleinanzeigen: Copy full text into "Rechtliche Angaben" field
  3. Update Master → Cascade Changes

    • When your address changes, update master source
    • Then update each platform individually

Unfortunately, there's no "sync" feature across platforms. You must manually update each channel when information changes.

Manual compliance

  • ❌Separate Impressum copies per platform
  • ❌Manual updates when address or VAT ID changes
  • ❌No single source of truth
  • ❌Easy to forget a marketplace

Aimix-assisted compliance

  • ✅Single master Impressum as canonical source
  • ✅Update once, then paste the latest version
  • ✅Consistent formatting across channels
  • ✅Built-in legal update reminders

Cross-Border VAT & Impressum

If you're using Amazon Pan-EU FBA or selling cross-border from another EU country:

VAT Thresholds Trigger Impressum Updates

Scenario: You're a French seller using Amazon FBA, storing inventory in Germany.

  • Below €10,000: Can sell under French VAT, use French Impressum
  • Above €10,000: Must register for German VAT, update Impressum with German VAT ID

OSS (One-Stop Shop) Doesn't Eliminate Impressum

Even if you use OSS for simplified EU VAT reporting, you still need proper Impressum for each market where you store inventory or have significant sales.

Common E-Commerce Impressum Mistakes

1. Using Marketplace As Your Address

❌ "Amazon Logistik, Graben 1, 86153 Augsburg"

This is an Amazon fulfillment center, not your business address. Even FBA sellers must list their own legal entity address.

2. Incomplete Company Information

❌ "TechStore" ✅ "TechStore GmbH, vertreten durch Geschäftsführer Max Mustermann, HRB 12345, Amtsgericht München"

For companies, you need full legal name, legal form, representative, and registration.

3. Forgetting to Update After Changes

You moved offices 8 months ago but Amazon Seller Central still shows the old address. This is a violation even if unintentional. Set quarterly reminder to verify Impressum is current.

4. P.O. Box for Privacy

❌ "Postfach 123, 80000 München"

P.O. boxes are explicitly prohibited. German law requires "ladungsfähige Anschrift" (summonable address) where a bailiff can physically serve legal documents.

Solution: Use legitimate virtual office service with physical presence.

5. Missing Phone Number in E-Commerce Context

While technically optional if you provide "equally rapid" alternative contact, e-commerce sites should always include a phone number. German courts scrutinize online shops more heavily than pure information websites.

6. Impressum Only on Homepage

Your Impressum link is buried on homepage but invisible on product pages, checkout, or category pages.

Fix: Footer link appears on every page of site, including checkout flow.

Most common marketplace errors
1

FBA address listed as company address

Fulfillment center locations do not count as your business address.

  • Always use your legal entity address
  • Virtual office is ok if it has real presence
2

VAT ID missing for FBA Germany

Storing inventory in Germany requires German VAT registration.

  • Add VAT ID in Seller Central
  • Update all marketplace profiles
3

Outdated company details

Old addresses or directors create immediate compliance risk.

  • Review quarterly
  • Sync all channels after changes

The Aimix Solution: E-Commerce Compliance Infrastructure

Running an e-commerce business requires juggling inventory, marketing, customer service, fulfillment, and more. Adding complex German legal compliance feels like one burden too many — especially when you're an international seller just trying to access the lucrative German market.

Traditional compliance approaches force you to:

  • Hire German lawyers at €200-€400/hour to draft Impressum, AGBs, privacy policies
  • Use multiple disconnected tools (generator A for Impressum, generator B for privacy policy, generator C for cookie consent)
  • Manually update everything when laws change (TMG → DDG transition caught many sellers off-guard)
  • Hope your DIY legal pages meet current standards
  • Track compliance separately for each sales channel

Aimix solves this with compliance-first e-commerce infrastructure:

For Shopify / WooCommerce Sellers

When you create a landing page or full e-commerce presence with Aimix:

  1. Automatic DDG-compliant Impressum generation — Answer questions about your business structure, we generate legally correct German Impressum
  2. Integrated legal page suite — Impressum + Privacy Policy (GDPR) + Cookie Consent (TDDDG) + AGBs generated together, not piecemeal
  3. BFSG-compliant accessibility — Your legal pages meet WCAG 2.1 AA standards automatically
  4. EU data sovereignty built-in — Hosted on AWS Frankfurt/Ireland, zero US data transfer
  5. Automatic legal updates — When regulations change, we update your legal pages automatically and notify you

For Marketplace Sellers (Amazon, eBay)

Aimix provides a compliance hub approach:

  • Generate master Impressum at yourstore.aimix.io/impressum
  • Use this as your canonical source
  • Copy to Amazon Seller Central, eBay Settings, Kleinanzeigen listings
  • When you need to update: change once in Aimix, then copy updated version to platforms

The Core Value Proposition

Instead of:

  • ❌ €3,000+ for lawyer consultations
  • ❌ Weeks of back-and-forth on legal text
  • ❌ Fragmented compliance (different generators, manual tracking)
  • ❌ Risk of outdated information when laws change

You get:

  • ✅ Generated in 5 minutes via natural language input
  • ✅ Integrated compliance (all legal pages work together)
  • ✅ Continuously updated (we track regulatory changes)
  • ✅ Audit-ready documentation (enterprise-grade consent tracking)

For e-commerce sellers specifically, Aimix understands the multi-platform reality. You're not just running a Shopify store — you're on Amazon, considering eBay, maybe expanding to Kaufland. You need compliance that scales across channels without multiplying legal costs.

Enforcement Reality for E-Commerce

German e-commerce enforcement is more aggressive than social media enforcement because:

  1. Higher stakes — E-commerce involves money, contracts, consumer protection
  2. Easier detection — Marketplace violations are visible to competitors doing competitor research
  3. Platform cooperation — Amazon/eBay are legally required to enforce compliance

Risk Factors

High-Risk Scenarios:

  • Large sales volume (€500K+ annual)
  • Direct German competitors in your niche
  • Consumer electronics, fashion, toys (heavily scrutinized categories)
  • Customer complaints about product quality/delivery (triggers regulatory review)

Enforcement Sources:

  • Competitors: Most common source of Abmahnungen
  • Wettbewerbszentrale: Consumer protection organization that monitors marketplaces
  • Landesmedienanstalten: Media regulatory bodies (especially for Kleinanzeigen)
  • Platform enforcement: Amazon/eBay automated compliance checks

Real Consequences

Abmahnung (Legal Warning):

  • Immediate correction demanded
  • Legal fees: €500-€1,500
  • Signed cease-and-desist declaration required
  • Penalty clause: €5,000-€25,000 if you violate again

Platform Sanctions:

  • Amazon: Listing suppression or account suspension until corrected
  • eBay: Account restrictions, search ranking penalties
  • Kleinanzeigen: Ad deletion

Government Fines:

  • Under § 33 DDG: Up to €50,000 per violation
  • Repeated violations: Escalating penalties
  • VerpackG violations: Up to €200,000 (separate from Impressum)

Platform-by-Platform Quick Reference

Platform Where to Add Impressum Visibility Difficulty Special Notes
Amazon.de Seller Central → Account Info Seller profile page Medium VAT ID required for FBA; LUCID mandatory
eBay.de Mein eBay → Einstellungen → Rechtliche Informationen Bottom of listings Medium Update all active listings when changed
Kleinanzeigen Per-listing "Rechtliche Angaben" field Each ad listing Easy Auto-populates after first entry
Shopify Pages → Add Impressum page, link in footer Footer on all pages Easy No automatic German compliance
WooCommerce WordPress Pages + Menu, or German Market plugin Footer on all pages Easy-Medium Plugin recommended for full compliance

Action Checklist for E-Commerce Sellers

Immediate Actions

  • Verify current Impressum — Is information complete and up-to-date?
  • Check visibility — Can customers access it within 2 clicks on all platforms?
  • Update outdated references — Replace "§ 5 TMG" with "§ 5 DDG" if still showing old law
  • Add missing fields — VAT ID, business registration, authorized representatives

Platform-Specific Verification

  • Amazon Seller Central — Account Info shows complete legal information
  • eBay.de Settings — Rechtliche Informationen is filled out and appears on listings
  • Kleinanzeigen — Rechtliche Angaben field populated for business account
  • Shopify/WooCommerce — Impressum page exists and is linked in footer
  • Own website — /impressum URL loads correctly, responsive on mobile
